One Year Strong: A Conversation with Bob Duffy, Commercial Director

Time flies when you're having fun, and it seems like just yesterday we welcomed Bob Duffy to Expect as our commercial director. In the blink of an eye, a year has passed, filled with exciting challenges – including the Yorkshire Three Peaks - strategic shifts and remarkable growth. Join us as we sit down with Bob to reflect on his first year, gain insights into his vision for the future, and celebrate his contributions to our ongoing success.

Q: What has surprised you the most about working for Expect in the past year?

Bob: A few things stand out. The pace is incredible! It's a small, tightly-knit team managing many moving parts. There's always something to do.

The level of detail required is also surprising. Though we might call ourselves a small business, we operate on a much larger scale. It's a refreshing change from my experience.

I've also been impressed by the strong team culture and closeness among everyone, from drivers to office staff. It's really remarkable.

Q: Favourite (working) day in the last year?

Bob: That has to be my first 'real' day. It marked the start of a new chapter, filled with exciting challenges and the opportunity to work with Matt, Andy, and Lisa. There have been many great days since, but that one holds a special place for me as it’s the one that started it.

Q: What are you most looking forward to achieving in the next year?

Bob: Several things. First, converting those pipeline customers into new clients. Second, seeing the teams grow and flourish in their roles. Third, nurturing existing client relationships and expanding our client base.

I'm also looking forward to seeing the company's growth and strategic progress, especially working with more local businesses, from Bradford to Yorkshire on a whole, and growing our contract logistics offering nationwide.

Q: What are the most notable trends you've observed in the logistics industry recently?

Bob: Technology and data, especially AI and system-driven solutions like TMS, are revolutionising the industry. Sustainability and carbon reduction are also major trends, with a growing focus on e-vehicles and proactive carbon reporting.

Q: And what do you see the trends becoming in the year to come?

Bob: Global supply chain challenges will drive increased local volumes. The decline of quality 3PL providers will likely push rates up, and competition for skilled professionals will increase wages. Service quality will become the primary factor for clients, overshadowing the focus on cheap rates.

Q: What advice would you give to someone starting a career in logistics today?

Bob: Be ready for hard work, as nothing comes easy in this dynamic industry. Nurture your relationships and reputation, as it's a small world.

Q: Describe the company in three words?

Bob: Honourable, Secure, Developing.

We're excited to see what the future holds under Bob's leadership, and we're confident that his strategic vision will guide us to even greater heights. Here's to another year of growth, innovation, and success!

Happy Anniversary, Bob!
